The ‘Double Reward’ Paradox: Why a Family-Only Zakah Leaves the Ummah Starving

Some people make the mistake of restricting their Zakah to only their relatives, even when there are other eligible recipients who may be more in need.

While it is permissible to give Zakah to poor relatives (as long as they are not dependents), Islam encourages a fair and balanced distribution to benefit the wider Muslim community.

The Prophet ﷺ said:   تُؤْخَذُ مِنْ أَغْنِيَائِهِمْ فَتُرَدُّ فِي فُقَرَائِهِم ْ

“It (Zakah) is to be taken from their rich and given to their poor.”– (Bukhari 1496)

– This means Zakah should circulate within the entire Muslim community, not just within one’s family.

– Allah mentioned 8 types of Zakah recipients to maximize the benefit to different parts of the community.

Giving Zakah to Relatives Is Allowed but Not Exclusive

It is encouraged to help poor relatives with Zakah if they qualify.
📜 The Prophet ﷺ said:

الصَّدَقَةُ عَلَى الْمِسْكِينِ صَدَقَةٌ، وَعَلَى ذِي الرَّحِمِ اثْنَتَانِ: صَدَقَةٌ وَصِلَةٌ

“Charity given to the poor is (counted as) charity, and charity given to a relative is (counted as) two: charity and maintaining family ties.” –  (At-Tirmidhi 658)

🔹 This means giving Zakah to relatives has extra reward, but it does not mean Zakah must be limited to them.

Why is this a mistake or not recommended?

  • It ignores the wider needs of the Muslim community.
  • It can lead to favoritism, where Zakah is given based on personal relationships instead of actual need.
  • Other eligible recipients (such as orphans, debt-ridden people, or travelers) may be more deserving.
  • Some deserving people don’t have any relatives. Who is going to help them?
  • It is a collective obligation on Muslims to help every person deserving Zakah. If some are left out (due to negligence or favouritsm), the entire community are committing a collective sin.

The Correct Approach

✅ Prioritize relatives if they are truly needy, but do not ignore others.
✅ If your relatives are not eligible, give Zakah elsewhere.
✅ Balance your Zakah distribution—do not give it all to one person or one group.
✅ If unsure, consult a scholar on how to distribute Zakah fairly.
