One of the gravest mistakes a Muslim can make is neglecting or refusing to pay Zakah. Zakah is a pillar of Islam, and failing to fulfill it is a major sin with severe consequences in this life and the Hereafter.
Zakah is not optional—it is an obligatory act of worship like Salah and fasting. Allah warns those who hoard wealth without paying Zakah:
“And those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah—give them tidings of a painful punishment. On the Day (of Judgment) when it will be heated in the Fire of Hell and branded on their foreheads, their sides, and their backs: ‘This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard!’- At-Tawbah (9:34-35)
🔹 This means that wealth that is not purified through Zakah will become a source of torment in the Hereafter.
What Happens to Those Who Reject Zakah?
- Apostasy for Those Who Deny It
- If someone denies that Zakah is obligatory (believing it is not part of Islam), they have left Islam (kufr), because they are rejecting a pillar of the religion.
- This is why Abu Bakr (RA) fought those who refused to pay Zakah after the Prophet ﷺ passed away.
Abu Bakr (RA) said:
“By Allah, if they withhold even a rope that they used to give in Zakah to the Prophet ﷺ, I will fight them for it!” – (Bukhari 1400)
🔹 This shows that refusing Zakah is a major crime against Islam.
- Severe Punishment in the Afterlife
- The Qur’an and Hadith confirm that those who withhold Zakah will suffer torment in Hellfire, where their wealth will turn into a source of punishment.
The Prophet ﷺ described the punishment of the one who hoards wealth without giving Zakah:
“Whoever Allah gives wealth but does not pay its Zakah, his wealth will appear to him on the Day of Judgment as if it’s a bald-headed venomous snake with two black spots over its eyes. It will coil around his neck and bite his cheeks, saying: ‘I am your wealth, I am your treasure.” – (Bukhari 1403)
This terrifying image emphasizes that Zakah is not just charity—it is a debt owed to Allah, and refusing to pay it leads to suffering.
Why Do Some People Avoid Paying Zakah?
1- Greed and Attachment to Wealth
- Some people feel that giving away 2.5% of their savings is a loss, forgetting that Zakah purifies and increases wealth.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Charity does not decrease wealth.” – (Muslim 2588)
2- Neglect and Laziness
- Some people just keep delaying paying Zakah until years pass, and they owe large amounts
Conclusion
Not paying Zakah is a serious sin with severe punishments in both this world and the Hereafter. Zakah is an individual obligation and one of the five pillars of Islam—neglecting it leads to spiritual and financial harm. The solution is understanding the importance of Zakah, calculating it properly, and ensuring timely payment.
