Imagine giving away hundreds of dollars in Zakah, only to discover that Allah never required it from you in the first place—and that you actually qualify to receive help instead!
Every single year, well-intentioned Muslims pay Zakah despite not meeting the basic financial criteria. While giving charity is always noble, paying Zakah when you aren’t required to can strain your household, contradict Islamic principles, and leave you struggling with unnecessary financial hardship.
- What is the Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth one must possess before Zakah becomes obligatory. It is calculated based on the value of either:
- 85 grams of pure gold
إِذَا كَانَ لَكَ عِشْرُونَ دِينَارًا حَالَ عَلَيْهَا الْحَوْلُ، فَفِيهَا نِصْفُ دِينَارٍ
“When you own 20 dinars (85g of gold) and a year passes on it, then 0.5 dinar (2.5%) is due as Zakah.”- (Abu Dawood 1573)
- 595 grams of pure silver
Allah commands Zakah as an obligation only on those who possess sufficient wealth:
لَيْسَ فِي مَا دُونَ خَمْسِ أَوَاقٍ صَدَقَةٌ
“There is no Sadaqah (Zakah) on less than five Awaq (approx. 595g) of silver.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1447, Muslim 979)
The person must own this amount continuously for a full lunar year (Hawl). If their wealth is below this, Zakah is not due on them.
What if someone has a mix of gold and silver that are individually less than the Nisab? Should they add them up to reach Nisab?
– Shafi’I & Maliki: Zakah is not due, as the Prophet ﷺ specified Nisab for each metal separately, not combined.
– Hanafi & Hanbali: Zakah would be due if the total is above the Nisab (more cautious opinion)
– How do I calculate the total to determine if I reached the Nisab?
o Multiply the gold amount by 7 then add it to the silver amount. If the total is 595 or more, than the Zakah is required.
o Example: Someone has 50 grams of gold and 250 grams of silver.
o 250 + 7×50 = 250 + 350 = 600, bigger than 595.
o Therefore, Zakah is required on the total at 2.5% on the value of each.
Why Is It a Mistake to Pay Zakah Without Qualifying?
1- It can cause hardship – Zakah is not meant to burden those who struggle to meet their own needs. Islam sets clear financial responsibilities, and giving Zakah without meeting the Nisab could lead to financial strain.
2- It contradicts Islamic principles – Allah has exempted the poor from Zakah obligations. Those below the Nisab are actually eligible to receive Zakah, not pay it!
What Should a Person Below the Nisab Do?
✅ If below the Nisab, Zakah is not obligatory. Instead, they should:
- Focus on managing their own finances responsibly.
- Give voluntary charity (Sadaqah) instead of Zakah, as Sadaqah is open to everyone regardless of wealth.
- Seek Zakah assistance if needed—those below Nisab may qualify to receive Zakah rather than pay it.
